The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-character code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), based on the business’s PAN. It is needed for most import and export transactions and is applied for online. GurugramHelp assists with the application and the yearly update that keeps it active.
How do I get an IEC?
Apply online on the DGFT portal with the business PAN, address proof, bank details (a cancelled cheque or bank certificate) and the applicant’s details. The IEC is issued electronically. After that, its details have to be updated or confirmed every year, even if nothing has changed.
Who needs an IEC
- Businesses importing goods into India
- Exporters of goods, and service exporters claiming export benefits
- Proprietors, firms, LLPs and companies alike
The annual update
DGFT requires IEC details to be updated or confirmed every year. An IEC that isn't updated can be de-activated, which stops shipments clearing customs until it is restored.
Documents commonly involved
- PAN of the business
- Address proof of the business premises
- Cancelled cheque or bank certificate
- ID of the proprietor, partner or director
